Tomb of Memius

This monument was a memorial to Memmius, son of Caius and grandson of the dictator Sulla. It was built in Ephesus during the 1st century AD by Augustus.

Sulla had managed to conquer Mithridates from the Pontic Empire (Black Sea) who had killed 80,000 Romans with his army. The monument reminded the achievement of Sulla which took place in 87 BC.

Memmius Monument of ancient Ephesus consisted of four facades and figures of Memmius’s father and grandfather had been sculptured on it. The monument was converted to a fountain 300 years after its construction.
