Alleyway behind house sti 2 CONC ll intact. Visited and photographed in 1991 by JWP & JCP. 2 CONT 2 CONT He was named after his father, Joseph James Pehoushek and probably his Uncle Charles Pehoushe 2 CONC k, although he also had an Uncle Charles Praus and a grandfather Charles V. Praus. 2 CONT 2 CONT 1909 - 1915 He went to Texas with family about 1909. Was in Colorado County Texas, outside E 2 CONC agle Lake on 25-26 April 1910 at time of U.S. Census. The family stayed until about 1915. Fat 2 CONC her Joseph James was a "Truck Farmer". Lived in small house about 3-4 miles North or NE of Ea 2 CONC gle Lake Texas. He was visited at least once by Uncle Jack Praus who was 7 years older than J 2 CONC CP. 2 CONT 2 CONT 1915 - The family returned to Mpls, living at 619 20th Ave. South, in the lower half of a two 2 CONC -story duplex, where he remembers ice skating on his "strap-on" skates on the sidewalk in fro 2 CONC nt of the house. He lived here about a year around 1915-1916. He says they were poor enough t 2 CONC hat his mother rented out the front room to a boarder. The house is still there when visite 2 CONC d by JWP & JCP in May 1991. 2 CONT 2 CONT Went to a school across the street from Grandma Praus' home at 327 20th or 21st Ave So (192 2 CONC 0 Census shows other families at both of these addresses). Dad thinks the school was named Cl 2 CONC ay. To the south a block or so was the old Bohemian Catholic Church "Our Lady of Perpetual He 2 CONC lp", Father Havorka attending. 2 CONT 2 CONT 1916 - About 1916 or 17 the family had moved to 656 Erie St. S.E. This was torn down when the 2 CONC y built the "new" Motley School (now, in 1991, gone). The original Motley School was on the N 2 CONC orthwest corner of Oak St. and Washington Ave. In later years Stub and Herb Lewis ran a bee 2 CONC r joint across the street. JCP went to Motley school with them and 40 years later his son JW 2 CONC P and future daughter-in-law CCP had one of their first dates there on July 14th, 1957 shortl 2 CONC y after they met. 2 CONT 2 CONT ca 1920 - While living at 656 Erie, his Dad, JJP rented the building at 630 (or 636) Erie Str 2 CONC eet and opened a store in it. This store was in operation for 3 or 4 years into 1920. 2 CONT 2 CONT 1918 - The family moved into a lower four-plex at 624 Erie St. S.E. Mpls. in 1918 and staye 2 CONC d there until 1920. JWP has a book "Beautiful Joe" given to JCP by his father, JJP, with insc 2 CONC ription "To Joseph from Father", 624 Erie St. S.E., April 17, 1919. Also a book "Black Beauty 2 CONC " with the 624 Erie St. address and his name in it. Attended Motley grade school near home o 2 CONC n Erie St. until at least June 1920. Then went East high School until unceremoniously transfe 2 CONC rred to South High School because of some infraction of East's rules ! 2 CONT 2 CONT Rosemary says they lived at 636 Erie St. in a fourplex from 1917 to 1922, and farther down Er 2 CONC ie (lower number) for about a year. 2 CONT 2 CONT At about this same time, his grandfather, Frantisek, owned a small store at 126 Warwick Stree 2 CONC t, while Frantiseks wife, and some of his children lived at 639 Erie Street. Robert Skonnord related many incidents o 2 CONC f his adventures with JCP to me (JWP) while they were both youths. Bob says that Joe ran arou 2 CONC nd, played ball with a really rough group of men. Other documents show different dates: 1900 Census shows born April 1846 2 CONC , 54 years old on 9 Jun 1900; 1910 Census on 20 April 1910 shows 66 yrs old; his "Residenc 2 CONC y Certificate" cover sheet shows born 28 Jan 1846.1920 Census has him at 79 yrs. 2 CONT 2 CONT Born or lived in Turmitz, Bohemia (now Trmice, 2-3 km SW of Usti nad Labem)) on Aussig ? Rive 2 CONC r, reportedly near Prague. However, since his Father and his younger brother were both born i 2 CONC n Melnik, it is safe to assume that he was as well. Perhaps Turmitz (now Trmice) is in Distri 2 CONC ct Melnik. Otakar Prachar reports in letter to me (3/26/95) "While in the area during our 197 2 CONC 8 visit I found there were 3 Vrutice villages: Melnicka Vrutice, Kropocova Vrutice, Benatsk 2 CONC a Vrutice. Note that Melnicka is the possesive form of Melnik, i.e. Melnicka Vrutice means Vr 2 CONC utice of Melnik (district)" 2 CONT 2 CONT Reportedly was a seaman in German Navy. Then settled down, bought a small flour mill in Melni 2 CONC k, Bohemia, but was a very impractical businessman. Uncle Charlie reportedly took photograph 2 CONC s of the mill on one of his "trips back home". 2 CONT 2 CONT The following from Grand Daughter Kay LaPlante, "to be taken with a grain of salt: Frank wa 2 CONC s a 'baron' with ties to an important family that once owned a large estate. During an uphea 2 CONC val (many years before Frank's time), the family was forced to flee, but before they left the 2 CONC y buried the family treasure under a stone wall that surrounded the property. The loot was n 2 CONC ever found, and to this day the family ghosts moan and cry over the treasure site 2 CONT 2 CONT Borrowed $700 from brother Karel (after Karel and Josephine immigrated to Russia with 4 child 2 CONC ren). Went bankrupt. Got job on a merchant vessel. This story may hold a clue as to how he ca 2 CONC me to the U.S. 2 CONT 2 CONT 1 Jan 1884 - A partial translation of a Declaration I have shows him canceling a lease he ha 2 CONC d on a flour mill at No. 45 Cenkov, called the Kopacov Mill, from the Horovive dominion. He h 2 CONC ad leased it from 1 Jan 1884 to end of Dec 1889. Cenkov is East of Hiway E55, about 15km N. o 2 CONC f Prague, about 2 km SE of Odolena Voda. Are visited by JWP in 2001. THIS IS PROBABLY INCORRE 2 CONC CT.... There is another Cenkov, 2 km SE of Jince, 10 km SE of Horovice, 13 km N of Pribram, w 2 CONC hich is probably the correct place. 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 Oct 1887 - According to a translation of the Declaration document, he cancels the lease o 2 CONC n Oct 2. 1887. This was, apparently shortly before he came to the U.S. We know he was in Bohe 2 CONC mia at least until the end of March 1888 because wife Rosalie gave birth to her last child bo 2 CONC rn in Bohemia (Mina) in Dec 1888. We believe he came alone to the U.S. Death Certificate say 2 CONC s on 20 Nov 1920 he had been in the U.S. 32 years. Was here for sure by 3 July 1893 when he b 2 CONC ought Life Insurance from Lodge. 2 CONT 2 CONT 1888 - Came to U.S. in 1888 (1887 According to 1900 Census data, 1890 according to 1910 censu 2 CONC s, 1892 by 1920 census, and 1879 by some family notes). Date uncertain because daughter Minni 2 CONC e (Mina) was born Dec 1888 in Bohemia. So when did Frantizek leave Bohemia? He cancelled flou 2 CONC r mill lease in Oct 1887. Most likely sometime after March 1888 when Mina would have been co 2 CONC nceived. Was the only brother to immigrate to United States. Reportedly landed in New Orlean 2 CONC s as a ship crewman, probably out of Hamburg. Some family stories say he landed in New York a 2 CONC nd promptly had his luggage stolen, including his papers. Family lore also says he intended t 2 CONC o go to St. Paul, because he was a miller, but because of language difficulties, he ended u 2 CONC p in St. Louis by mistake. So he walked from St. Louis, Mo to St. Paul, Minnesota. Made his w 2 CONC ay to Minneapolis with the goal of getting a job at Pillsbury Mills. Worked at all kinds of c 2 CONC ommon labor in Minneapolis. He wound up working in a cigar factory in St. Paul because Pillsb 2 CONC ury wouldn't hire him until he could speak English. He was fairly well educated for his time 2 CONC . Could speak German which was the official language in Austria-Hungary. Before they left Eur 2 CONC ope, none of the children had been allowed to speak Bohemian in school. This point is disputab 2 CONC le, as children of other brothers spoke Bohemian and passed it along to their children - as r 2 CONC eported by Otakar Prachar, who speaks Czech. Grandpa Frank deplored this and started small cl 2 CONC asses for immigrant children in Bohemian when they settled in Minneapolis. He also spoke som 2 CONC e French and did wind up working briefly for Pillsbury Mills. 1900 Census says he was a "Mill 2 CONC er". 2 CONT 2 CONT Newspaper story of "Aunt Bess's" death says Frantizek came in 1888, then he brought Frank an 2 CONC d Bertha in 1890, then his wife and FOUR youngest children in 1893. This doesn't account fo 2 CONC r Wilhelmina who reportedly had been born in Bohemia. 1910 census says Rosalie, Bertha,Charle 2 CONC s and Mina came in 1894 (Joseph James probably came in 1894 too, but he had moved from home b 2 CONC y 1910 census). Because Veronica was born in Minnesota in 1894, I believe Rosalie and childre 2 CONC n came in 1893. 2 CONT 2 CONT ca. 1890 - "Two years after arriving bought a small house and lot for $900, then sent for fam 2 CONC ily". [Family legend] 2 CONT 2 CONT 29 March 1893 - When young Frank died, Frantizek was living at 736 Lenox. 2 CONT 2 CONT 3 July 1893 - Was member of the "Grand Lodge of the Ancient Order of United Workmen of the St 2 CONC ate of Minnesota, Bridal Veil Lodge No. 108"... carried $2000 Beneficiary Certificate (Insura 2 CONC nce Policy - issued 3 July 1893) from them, payable to his wife.
